Learn how to re-create this cool unique abstract piece in Photoshop!

Photoshop isn’t JUST for Photo editing, web design, and all that jazz. Why let it keep you from letting out your artistic side. I am going to run you guys through the steps I used, to create this neat and interesting abstract piece I designed.

Click to make bigger

So lets get started!

1. Create your blank canvas in Photoshop. Lets make this canvas taller then it is wide. 400×625 pixels is how large my canvas is. The first thing im going to do is unlock the very first layer and name it BG. Take out the gradient tool and use the default “Orange, Yellow, Orange” gradient. Select the “radial gradient” style from the top tool bar. Here is what I got:

1

2. Now find a nice render, anything. A stock photo of a town, or a stock photo of a girl, ANYTHING literally! I used this neat stock photo of a street in Japan.  Copy and paste the stock into a new layer, and it doesn’t have to take up the whole canvas. Next I got out my brush tool and used a tree brush set to brush a few “trees” on my page. Ctrl+click the brushed layers and fill it with the same gradient as above.

2

3.  Next were going to duplicate that original BG layer from step 1, and move it ontop of all the other layers. Set its blending mode to “Luminosity”.

3

4. Now merge the layer with the “tree” brushes onto the layer with the stock, duplicate that layer and move it above all the other layers. I then rotated this layer horizontally and moved it to the top. Take out the smudge tool and use a “smudge” brush with some effects on it, to smudge the image around a little. Smudge at points that will create a neat shards effect. Pull out the eraser tool and use the same smudge tool with the same effects.

4

5. Duplicate this layer and go to: Filter>Distort>Wave. Use the default settings and click okay. Smudge the waves that were just produced and set this layer to: Luminosity.

5

6. Now make a new blank layer ontop of everything. Find a neat brush set you have with a good flow. I have this brush set with a bunch of birds that looks neat, so I brushed them onto a new layer, flowing with my document. Then make a new layer ontop of all of THIS, and use some nice light brushes to create an abstracty glowing source from the bottom of your document. Set the last layer you just made to: Luminosity.

6

7. Now you can add your text on a new layer. I just used a font called “Affliction”. Typed out my name, rotated it vertically. No effects on it.

7

8. As you can see its already taken shape. The next few steps are basically freestyle. Do what you need to make your image look how its supposed to look. Next I created a new layer and went to: Image>Apply Image. This should duplicate your ENTIRE work onto one layer. I applied affects to this layer, rotated the whole canvas, blurred it, erased, smudge.

8

9. Duplicated this layer. Blurred it more with Filter>Blur>Motion Blur. Created a new Gradient Map layer using a Black>White gradient, set this layer on Darken. Added a black border on the bottom and BAM!

Final Result!

Final Result!

Thats it! Remember this is something that should come from your heart and mind as an artist. Do what you think will make your piece unique. I’d love to see some results! Post them in the comments section if you give this a god!

Thanks again guys!
